Getting help with long-term health conditions
With a background in Health Psychology and specialist training in treating individuals with long term health conditions, I offer therapy that looks at understanding the relationship between our mind and body.
Therapy can look at a variety of things including: why we do unhealthy things, how we handle stress, how we manage when our symptoms do not improve, and how we deal with long-term illnesses. Therapy can explore ways to help you live a healthier life and manage your health conditions better. This might mean specifically looking at managing symptoms, adhering to treatment regimens, adjusting to a diagnosis and improving quality of life even if our health cannot improve. It may also mean exploring the role of psychosocial factors such as culture, socioeconomic status, relationships and how all of this interacts with our health and wellbeing.
The overall aim is to understand how our minds impact our health and find ways to help us live better and more fulfilling lives despite the limitations a condition might place on us.
Biopsychosocial model
I use the biopsychosocial approach to understand mental and physical health.
This approach says that there are three main factors involved in our health and wellbeing:
-
Biological: This part focuses on our physical bodies—things like genetics, hormones, and how our organs work.
-
Psychological: This part is about our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors—how our minds influence our health and how we cope with things like stress.
-
Social: This part looks at our relationships, community, culture, and environment—how our social connections and surroundings impact our health.
